THE SUPPER III/ RESEARCH (CONT.)

SUPPER III ACCORDING TO ARIANE BLANKENBURG

After the start of the series in 2009, Supper III marks the end of a three-part performance by French artist Alexine Chanel.

Chanel led the viewer into Supper I and II with an ironic, sometimes parodic, approach to the world of lies and illusions of the bourgeoisie and etiquette.

In Supper III the artist analyses and pointedly dissects the art world. Twelve dinner guests, all artists, take part in a 12-course meal. The items on the menu are all fake and composed of sculptures of increasing size, coloured and organised in the order of the spectrum of light. The 12  supper guests will be served by four curators.

In addition, this menu plan will be orchestrated around the popular children’s birthday party game of ‘musical chairs’, the dinner guests compete for the remaining open seats. With each course served, one chair-less guest artist is kicked out.

The colours stand metaphorically for the bending and breaking of the guests. The game culminates in an opulent transparent dessert in the shape of a pyramid, which, like the accumulation of the spectral colours, yields pure light and is left only for the winner of the last seat to eat.

In this scenario, Chanel powerfully illustrates the cut and thrust of the art world. It is no illusion that the art world functions just as cruelly and as market-oriented as life in our society in general. As in Darwin's concept of ‘Survival of the Fittest’, it makes sense to examine the strategies used by artists as they compete between themselves to gain the attention of galleries and curators, not to mention collectors. It is a rivalry of showiness, flattery and wooing. This is illustrated by the dance for attention at the dinner table, whereby the participants move ever closer to the narrow tip of success, often without regard for their peers.
Who will prevail? Is it the friendly, sincere and hard-working? Is it the courageous or the trickster? Who likes whom? Everyone knows the Art Market has its own rules.

These 12 chosen artists sit at the table on behalf of the thousands of mostly impoverished artists living in Berlin, and partake in this Last Supper, the last meal for most, confronted by only four curators. The meal starts with a very simple, small dish of almost nothing: blue glitter soup. But as the number of guests is whittled down, so the dishes served become bigger and more decadent until the climax is reached in an enormous pyramid cake for the winner of this cruel, satirical game. This supper is not about culinary delight but about winning the game and achieving the prize of success. In fact, the participants taking the rounds are in a certain way just as fake as the menu.

The event is part of Berlin's Month of Performance Art and can be watched by the interested public through the shop windows at the back of the Karlstadt department store, at the art space of Stefanie Hannah.

A further highlight of this event is that the menu will be presented outside on a display, with all of its allegorically titled courses and with the possibility of actually ordering the 12 courses. However, whatever the order, the guests will only receive bratwurst. Not all that glitters is gold!

Alexine Chanel Supper III
Text Ariane Blankenburg
